How to Evaluate a Hoopers Tournament – Create the Result List

Hoopers is scored over several runs by fault points – the team with the fewest fault points wins. Time is irrelevant to the placement.

This guide explains Hoopers scoring step by step and shows how the Dog Sport Tournament Helper automates everything from starter import to the finished result list and certificate.

How does scoring work in Hoopers?

In Hoopers each team completes several runs (3 by default, up to 4 are counted). Fault points are awarded per run – the fewer, the better. The total is the sum of the runs; ranking is ascending (fewest points first).

If a run is not rated or the maximum time is exceeded (“o.B.”), it counts with a penalty score. The time itself does not affect placement – it is only used for the wait-time display.

  • V (Excellent): 0–5 fault points
  • SG (Very good): 10–15 fault points
  • G (Good): 20–25 fault points
  • o.B. (not rated): from 25 points or time exceeded
  • DIS / nb: invalid run (sorted to the bottom of the ranking)

Classes and runs

The Tournament Helper supports the Hoopers classes H1, H2, H3 and PLAY. The number of runs is configurable (default: 3). A missing run is rated “o.B.” with penalty points so the total stays fair.

Evaluation step by step

From incoming entries to the award ceremony, Hoopers evaluation in the Tournament Helper follows five steps:

  1. Import starters

Import the entry list from a DVG PDF or OMA file – no manual typing. Classes, handlers and dogs are taken over automatically.

  2. Create start lists & score sheets

When the tournament starts, the Tournament Helper automatically generates start lists, presence and chip-control lists and one Hoopers score sheet per class and run as PDF.

  3. Score the runs

The fault points of each run are entered on a tablet by the scribe (false start, faults, 3 consecutive faults). The rating is derived from the points automatically.

  4. Ranking & tie-breaks

The ranking is computed automatically by total points. On a tie the individual runs are compared (best run first); in championship mode a run-off (Stechen) follows.

  5. Result lists & certificates

Finally you get result lists per class (including a separate youth ranking), certificates and a tournament archive file with all data.

Which PDFs does the Tournament Helper create for Hoopers?

All documents are generated automatically and in the official layout – from the registration desk to the award ceremony:

  • Start list per class
  • Presence list
  • Chip-control list (microchip check)
  • Hoopers score sheet per class and run (columns: false start max 2, faults, 3 consecutive faults, total faults, points max 25)
  • QR-code PDF with login links for staff and starters
  • Result list per class plus a separate youth result list
  • Certificates with placement – with your own club logo and background
  • Per-starter labels (with all runs) and a tournament archive Excel with all data

Standard and championship mode

In standard mode the ranking is assigned automatically by the chosen ranking scheme. On equal total points the individual runs are compared (each best run first).

In championship mode previous qualifications also count; if it remains equal a run-off is held. A disability rule and time play no role in Hoopers.

Import starters instead of retyping

The Tournament Helper imports starters directly from DVG PDF entry lists and the OMA format – for Hoopers and Rally Obedience. This saves the registration desk hours and avoids typos.

Common mistakes in manual evaluation

Typical pitfalls are incorrectly summed runs, a missing o.B. penalty for runs not completed, a forgotten separate youth ranking and unresolved ties. Automatic evaluation removes these sources of error.
